Recalling enjoyable memories of hanging out with your mates, staying out too late, frequenting the local fish ‘n’ chip shop and games arcades and playing lots of pinball in the ‘80s and early ‘90s, is the motivation that inspires artist Marcel Varna with his collection of new artwork, Arcade Days, currently on show on the feature wall at KickArts.
Arcade Days is a snapshot of the artist’s life at the time, where nights were spent on a pocketful of coins in old, dark and narrow arcades only illuminated by the lights flashing on the pinball machines. Having a great time with your mates, grabbing a burger, some chips and an iced coffee or two, playing pool, pinball and the latest hip arcade games and only getting disgruntled if your machine tilted.
Marcel’s character styled paintings and sculpture encapsulate the essence of his Arcade Days, paying tribute to his mates and having a good laugh at the great times they shared in the games’ temples of the ‘80s and early ‘90s.
Arcade Days runs until Saturday 8 November at KickArts Contemporary Arts – 96 Abbott Street, Cairns. The Galleries are open Tuesday – Saturday from 10.00am – 5.00pm. All welcome. Free entry.
