  • LIVING QUEER: Gay activist beaten to Death

    A Ugandan gay rights activist whose name was published on a list of the nation's "top homosexuals" was bludgeoned to death in his home near the capital, his lawyer said Thursday. A neighbor found David Kato dead and notified authorities, according to the lawyer, John Onyango. Kato's money and some clothes were missing after the attack, Onyango said. It was unclear whether Kato's killing was linked to his gay rights activism or a front-page story in a Ugandan tabloid that reignited anti-gay sentiments late last year.

  • Thai Airline Now Boasts Transsexual Flight Attendants

    ironically-named airline P.C. Air claims it's the first in the world to hire openly transsexual flight attendants. When the airline begins flying Asian routes in April, four transsexual people will be among the 30-person cabin crew, Forbes reports. Though Thailand is tolerant of transvestites and transsexuals, who are known as "katoeys" or "ladyboys," they often have difficulty finding jobs outside of the entertainment and beauty industries. Company president Peter Chan, a former flight attendant himself, says, "I think it's time for the Thai society to be more open and support freedom of all sexes."

  • SEX AND LIVING: Gay in Brunei "Big Dollars"

    THE first initial study on homosexuality in Brunei carried out by Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) revealed the existence of underground gay clubs for men with some paying as much as $400 for a sexual relations with another man. The working paper, titled "Gay in Brunei Darussalam: An initial observation" was presented during the National Seminar on Social Issues yesterday by two researchers at the Academy of Brunei Studies (APB), UBD, Pg Khairul Rijal Pg Hj Abdul Rahim and Zulhilmi Hj Jaidin.

  • COMMENTARY: Freedom for US Gay Arabs

    Around midnight, upstairs in a small club on Avenue of the Americas, the pitch-black dance floor resounded with the rapid stomps and warbling, high-energy cries of the dabke, an Arab folk dance performed at weddings and other celebrations. When the strobe lights flashed, they revealed a sea of raised hands. A man in the crowd removed his kaffiyeh, the traditional headdress worn by some Arab and Kurdish men, and whipped it around in the air.

Last week an 11-year-old boy was placed in the care of two male homosexuals by the Victorian Commission for equal Opportunity and Human Rights. The boy, reportedly overjoyed at the decision, had been abused and neglected in his previous home. The homosexual pair had previously been fostering him. Says the Equal Opportunity Commissioner: it is too early to say whether the case sets a precedent.
