Last month, hundreds of people turned out for what was billed as a night of cage fighting in Fort Smith of the US. But the event took an unexpected turn, and it was the handiwork of famous comedian Sacha Baron Cohen.
The event was set up just to get an anti-gay reaction from the crowd
For a few hours, the fight night was completely normal.
But a special emphasis was put on whipping the crowd into a frenzy with Macho cheers and anti-gay theatrics. But virtually no one involved knew what organisers were building towards.
"I knew that people were coming in from Hollywood, had more money to spend on this stuff than they knew what to do with," says Dave Haley, who was hired to run the concession stand at the convention center. He was pushed to sell as many beers as he could for $1 each.
So the crowd got liquored and fired up before being hit with a surprise. Two men posing as cage fighters instead treated the crowd to a gay show.
"First he said I'm gonna kick this guy's butt, and got the crowd cheering, let's all go for it, let's kick his butt, and finally they just embraced and started kissing," recalls Haley.
Witnesses describe the fighters tearing off each others clothes and while in their underwear, kissing down each other's chest.
Haley says the crowd started throwing beers, t-shirts and chairs into the ring, and made a quick exit.
Everyone involved in the event, including the promoter, had no clue the prank was planned.
Haley is sure the event was all staged to elicit that one anti-gay reaction, which he says worked to perfection.
The web site for the Bruno movie has posted an announcement claiming responsibility for the fake fight night.
The movie is centred around a character named Bruno - a gay Austrian fashion reporter.
The website says hundreds of unwitting Arkansans are now extras in the movie.
